Where's My Phone for BlackBerry version 3 Privacy Information
The Short Version:
Where's My Phone accesses only the data it needs to perform it's documented
function, when it's needed. It never transmits any data to Essare LLC.
All data transmitted by Where's My Phone is transmitted via E-Mail or SMS
("Messages"), directly in
response to commands issued via E-Mail, or in response to a SIM card change in
the case of SIM change notification. These messages are sent
as replies to the address from which the initiating command was sent, or to the
SMS change notification number specified in the Options screen.
The Where's My Phone app does not retain an internal history of the data it
accesses. Please feel free to contact
support@essare.net with specific privacy
questions.
Detailed Explanation:
The Where's My Phone for Blackberry App - What data it stores on your
Blackberry:
Where's My Phone ("WMP"), both the free and pro editions, store the options you
set in the options page in your phone's memory. In addition to the
options, it stores the address (email or SMS) that the last 'Start' command came from.
This is necessary for the phone reset notification to function. It also
stores the version of WMP you last accepted the EULA for. This is
necessary to avoid requiring you to accept the EULA every time you start the
program. Besides these items, only program state information is
stored (for example "is an alert currently in progress?").
What Data the WMP Application Accesses from your Blackberry:
Because WMP uses email for communication, it reads a list of email
addresses that your BlackBerry receives email for so that
they may be displayed on the "About WMP" screen. While it's running,
the WMP software looks at the subject of each email message received by the
device. If SMS is enabled in the Options screen, it also looks at the
content of each incoming SMS message. If the text being examined
does not start with the code word, processing on that message is stopped. If the
text being examined does contain the code word, WMP looks for a valid command
directly following the code word, and processes it accordingly.
The Pro edition of WMP accesses your current battery level to report it in
outgoing status emails.
Location Information
When you issue a LOCATE command, WMP accesses your Blackberry's
Location (GPS) system to determine and report it's location. Once the
location has been determined, or after WMP determines that a location can not be
found, WMP terminates it's link to your Blackberry's location system.
On GSM phones, if a location can not be determined via GPS, WMP will send cell
tower information via the internet to a Google Maps
query in an attempt to get an approximate location.
Information Sent by the WMP App
WMP only sends information from your Blackberry via Email or SMS.
All email or SMS messages sent by WMP are done in response to a command issued via email
or SMS, as
described in the user documentation. WMP may also send an SMS notification
if the SIM card was changed in a GSM phone, if you have SIM Change Notification
set up in the options page.
Access to the Telephone
The WMP application interfaces with the telephone in your Blackberry to
initiate an Emergency Call, Call Owner call, or CALLME command call. On
GSM phones, WMP will get cell tower information from the telephone as an
alternative to GPS location, as described above in "Location Information".
